Strobe test

Image quality is improving a lot lately but I have found strobing a big issue and with the arrival of mechanical shutters in digital camera's it was time for a new strobe test.
To be able to compare the moves properly we used a motion controlled head with the lowest speed already above the 'old film' rule of panning a minimum of 4 secs from left to right.
We did the test in two directions to see if that made a difference and we doubled the speed in two more steps.

Cine-Lens database available

At http://www.zebrafilm.com there is a Database page with all available Cine-lenses compiled. A Unique collection of more than 800 lenses with details like minimum focus, weight, size etc.The same Database is also used in the Filmcalculator Software / App for iPhone and Android devices. Currently there are 3 screens with Lenses, Film-Stock and Lamps. They will be updated by the manufacturers themselves.Soon there will be a Camera Format Database added for general use.

Transvideo Super Bright 15" monitor first look

Voor wie de Transvideo monitors niet kent: het zijn hele stevige monitors in allerlei maten 6,8,10,12 en 15” die recentelijk een update hebben gekregen. De meeste hebben nu behalve analoog en SDI ook een HDMI ingang gekregen.

Van de meeste versies is ook een Super Bright versie gemaakt. Normaal gesproken houden ze nogal vast aan ‘standaard’ kalibratie, wat leuk is in de studio maar buiten al gauw te donker is. Dan heb je er ook wat weinig aan dat je kleuren precies kloppen als je toch nauwelijks wat ziet. Die tent wordt dan onmisbaar.
In de praktijk heb ik daar niet altijd tijd voor want met een (vlock) accu op de monitor en een kabeltje heb je meestal al een plaatje voordat ‘het circus’ arriveert. Omdat ik vooral de scopes op de monitor veel gebruik wil je ook dat die goed af te lezen zijn.
De nieuwe 15”Super Bright leek me een mooie opvolger. Inmiddels weet ik dat er behalve een nieuw LCD scherm er ook LED verlichting in het paneel zit.
Ik heb hier een prototype wat letterlijk uit het lab getrokken is en naar mij gestuurd maar het was al en heel aardig plaatje.

RED SSD module

In een forum post van vele pagina’s introduceert RED de SSD side module met SSD disks: SSDmoduleklein

(SSD= solid state disk, een harddisk zonder bewegende delen)

Drie variaties voorlopig van 64,128 en 256gb. Het zijn weer door RED aangepaste disks dus alleen uit te lezen met hun eigen SSD reader.

Het geheel bestaat nu uit:

SSD side module for R1 =$1500
SSD side module for EPIC= $2500
De disks:
64GB - $950
126GB - $1800
256GB - $3200

Alexa Infrared test

After testing the Alexa today for infrared issues it became clear that you should be carefull using plain ND filters.
We recomend to do your own testing but we found that ND filters above 0.6 (2 stops) already gave a clear magenta hue and color shifts. Additionally we found a big difference between the Panchro hotmirror filter, (working very well), and the Rosco True Color doing only half the job.
